World’s Oldest Person Dies at Age 117: Are eggs good for you ?

It was ironic on this Easter weekend, that we received the sad news that Italian woman, Emma Morana, the world’s oldest person, died at age 117, when  she stopped breathing in her home. She was  believed to be the last surviving person born in the 1800’s and lived through three centuries. We are also learnt that this lady attributed her longevity to her diet of 3 eggs a day: 2 raw and 1 cooked. None of them chocolate eggs. This brings into focus the often discussed topic of are eggs good for you ?

Emma Morana. Are eggs good for you ?

Ms Morano often went against medical advice, something that frustrated her doctors. Many of  them advised her not to eat 3 eggs daily but she continued to do so even on the day she passed away. So are eggs good for you ? Are they high in cholesterol? Will they make you put on weight? These are all the questions I get asked on a daily basis.

Eggs are good for you. The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and CSIRO, two very important advisory health bodies, have given eggs the green light.  Eggs have 11 essential vitamins and minerals and add tremendous variety to a balanced diet. Recent evidence shows that daily consumption does not lead to an increased risk of coronary heart disease, saturated fats and can be eaten daily even if you have diabetes or other cardiometabolic conditions. It has the highest quality of protein and perfect for children especially since the ABS states that only 4.5% of children have enough lean protein in their diets.

Are eggs good for you ?

In my consulting, the metabolic style of eating I recommend in my weight loss programs does encourage consumption of eggs as it is nutrient dense, high in essential vitamins and helps with satiety and fullness. They are versatile, inexpensive and readily accessible. I believe that eggs are good for you and should be in everybody’s diet whether you are a child or over 100 years old.

Don’t be afraid to add eggs to your diet. Emma, shows us that a daily diet of eggs can lead to longevity and long lasting health.  Have some chocolate eggs this Easter weekend, but don’t forget to chuck in a real egg or two.

Please comment, and tell us how you enjoy your eggs.
